Surfing destinations

The waves of El Lloret are unique in the Canary Islands, and in Playa de las Canteras, tube waves of two to three meters and at high speeds can be seen.

Surfing in Latin America
Surfing is a thriving sport in Latin America and especially in countries Surfing destinationslike Peru, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Peru hosted the Second Surfing Championship (ISF) in 1965, and stressed the popular beach of Punta Rocas, Peru. The winner was the peasant champion Felipe Pomar.

In Peru, the leading figure of Peruvian surfing is world champion Sofia Mulanovich.

In Puerto Rico, surfing is done off the coast of Aguadilla Rincon and also off the island of Culebra. The formation of waves (especially in the area of Rincon) is quite similar to the waves in Hawaii.

In Venezuela this sport is practiced mostly on the Caribbean Sea coast, where natural conditions are very favorable. There are a large variety of beaches, good surf and wonderful weather all year, particularly in Margarita Island and the states of Vargas, Aragua and Sucre.

In Argentina, surfing is only an occasional sport, being exclusively and massively practiced in the summer season. The most chosen beaches for the practice of surfing in Argentina are Mar del Plata, Miramar, Necochea and Balneario El Condor, Bajada de Picoto and the Jetty. Balneario El Condor is just thirty kilometers from the city of Viedma, the capital of Rio Negro. Encuantra Picoto is in a depression about two kilometers from spa condor.

The Espigon is a beach located in the province of Rio Negro, forty-five kilometers from the city of Viedma. On this beach there are activities such as fishing, and sports such as surfing and bodyboarding. The size of the waves is not constant, but they reach more than three meters when there is a Southeast blow.

Surfing started on these shores more than fifteen years ago, but never exceeded twenty boards at a time in the sea. The sport is beginning to become more popular among the inhabitants of the Viedma-Patagones region, as they are influenced by surfers coming from other places to enjoy the waves.

Mar del Plata, Miramar and Necochea are the areas that receive the tidal waves from the south. The point that marks the beginning of this area of good waves is out of Mar del Plata because of its location as being one of the most exposed points of the coast.

At that point waves crash eastward, then southerly, rotating up the beaches, practically pointing south, to Necochea. These two points are approximately 150 kilometers apart, so finding a suitable wind breaker is a trip that can be performed in a day. In the winter after a Southeast blow the waves can reach 2.5 meters high.

In Chile, due to the low temperature of the sea, surfing is practiced mostly in the northern region, and on Easter Island. A good choice for surfers from the central area is the town of Pichilemu, where surfing has become a very popular sport. However, this massively-growing sport is practiced mostly in the Northern Zone of the country, with the major consolidation being in Arica, thanks to its climate.

Special events are the “Arica Big Buey” International Surfing Championship and the Arica, Chile WCT Rip Curl Pro Search. The best months for surfing in Chile are in the winter, as storms in the south commonly produce large waves that hit the northern coast and last for several days.
