Parachute Applications

The parachute has three main applications: rescue, for sport or hobby, and transportation.

Rescue
With an impending crash of an airplane, any person either individually or the entire aircraft, can use the parachute to slow down a fall and thus protect from a collision.

Ballistic Recovery Systems
This category also includes the braking parachutes for landing capsules of spaceships and fighter planes, as they can be deployed at the airstrip by the application of the brake and lower the speed very quickly.

Sport / Hobby
Parachuting
The parachute is used for safe landing in parachute jumping. Here, jumpers are usually most interested in the flight on a parachute, than in the previous flight phase.

The gliders are a further development of the parachute. These are suitable with a larger surface area, offering improved control and optimized profile for use of updrafts and downdrafts. Gliders can be kept in the air for long hours. Unlike classic parachutes, gliders are not opened in a free fall, but already raised while on the ground.

Hang gliding, glider and paraglider pilots take on their flights with a rescue parachute that is used when the aircraft is not airworthy.

Modeling
Even in modeling parachutes are used. However, these are usually simple constructions used without replacement parachutes. Those used in modeling are often referred to as recovery systems for model rockets, but are also used for the release of small figures from model airplanes.

Transportation

By parachuting through the air, transportation can be achieved to locations that are not easily accessible. This is implemented, in particular, for military purposes by paratroopers, where in addition to the soldiers, armored vehicles and all equipment can be dropped in the middle of enemy territory.

Even some bombers have dropped bombs attached to parachutes, like the Daisy Cutter. In such bombs, the use of the parachute delays the explosion of the bomb, enabling the pilot to fly the plane out of the blast area. In this way, bombs can be dropped even at low altitudes.

The civil application of this particular design can be associated with relief help. Burden parachutes can be quickly and easily dropped into an affected region.
